More than ever this year, it was wonderful to be back in the water making a splash for our 15th Annual Great Adventures Green Island Ocean Swim.
With swimmers aged between 12 and 73 years, 185 swimmers took part in the open 1.5km and 3km events. Swimming over corals and spotting turtles, reef sharks and colourful fish, it is a truly unique swim course over Green Island's National Marine Park.
Before the main events the fun “Nippers” swim for the under 12-year-olds saw our future ocean swimmers cheered on as they enjoyed a taste of swimming in the Great Barrier Reef.
Congratulations to the talented field of swimmers taking out the wins. In the 3km event, brothers Rhys and Oliver Kurukchi vied for first and second places in the men’s event, while Megan Hendry won the Women’s. In the 1.5km event, 15 year old Emilee Saleich took out the win and 17 year old Ryan Woodward won the men’s. The 500 m swim was won by 24 year old Mako Watanabe.
Special thanks to Surf Life Saving Queensland for their continued support and community spirit in conducting in-water safety for the event, to the Cairns Crocs Triathlon Club for the electronic timing ( a first this year!), as well as Tabata, Pro Dive Cairns and the Quicksilver Group for their continued support and donations in prizes and swim caps.
Thank you to all the fabulous swimmers, many who have swum with us for many years, and those who joined us for the first time. As a sold out event for the second consecutive year, we can’t wait to welcome you all back next year!
