Norman Reef Platform Shines Again

After sustaining damage during Cyclone Yasi earlier this year, Great Adventures' Norman Reef activity platform is once again welcoming guests back to her home on the Great Barrier Reef after a $700,000 refurbishment. With the refurbishment and new equipment now on the platform, it will ensure our passengers have the newest and best facilities available to enjoy their time at the reef.

Tony Baker, Managing Director Quicksilver Group said "It has been a lot of hard work by our Engineering Department and many local contractors to basically rebuild the platform and now it is looking better than ever. The major damage was to the kitchen, servery and plant rooms that were damaged beyond repair by the force of the water crashing over the side. While the top sun bathing deck sustained no damage, a large part of the main deck had been lifted and twisted such was the force of the waves. This was the first area to be fixed followed by 32 new sets of tables and chairs that have been secured to the platform floor, new bain-marie and food serving area, fridge, dive compressor and generator, 7 showers and 8 change rooms plus a number of new enhancements that will enable our passengers to once again visit Norman Reef."

Engineering Manager Peter Price said "The platform was removed from the water to complete a full hull inspection prior to returning to the water for the main deck refurbishment. We would like to thank and acknowledge the work of our local contractors who supplied the new equipment and worked alongside the Great Adventures engineering staff spending 5 months and many hours rebuilding the platform at Cairns Slipways.
