Great Adventures Green Island Ocean Swim makes a splash

Green Island, Great Barrier Reef: In the 7th annual Great Adventures Green Island Ocean Swim, 93 swimmers took to the water to compete in 1.5km and 3km distances in this unique Great Barrier Reef swim event on Sunday 16 September.

With entrants from Cairns, Tablelands, Townsville and Tasmania, the swim attracted competitors aged from 12-82 years, including Olympic swimming champion, Shane Gould, proving to be a great inspiration to the field of swimmers. Veteran Cairns swimmer, Thelma Bryan, aged 82 also continued to be an inspiration having competed successfully in the event since its inception in 2006.

It was the younger swimmers however that took out the major prizes in some challenging conditions and an outgoing tide. Taking out the Men’s 3 km swim, 15 year old Max Fifield crossed the line first in a time of 38 minutes 42 seconds while 17 year old Meaghan Hill-Murray took out the Women’s 3km swim in a time of 43 minutes 26 seconds, backing up her win in the 1.5km event in 2011.

In the Men’s 1.5km swim, 17 year old Nicolas Arenas took out first place for the second consecutive year, while 14 year old Megan Kreuter crossed the line first in the Women’s 1.5 km swim.

The event also included a fun swim for enthusiastic junior swimmers under the age of 12.

Now in its seventh year, Great Adventures annual Green Island Ocean Swim is a wonderful community event and is supported by Surf Live Saving Queensland, The Cairns Crocs Triathalon Club, Powerade and View Tabata.
