June 29th, 2009Great Adventures Green Island Ocean Swim
The annual Great Adventures Green Island Ocean Swim is set for a big splash on Sunday 6 September when competitors take on the 1.5km and 3km course in this unique Great Barrier Reef event.
Now in its fourth year, this is the only swim to take place from a Great Barrier Reef island and in the past years has attracted participants from around the world. Twice winner of the women’s 3km division, Penny Palfrey from Townsville, was this month the first female finisher in the 2009 Manhattan Island Marathon Swim (New York).
The Green Island Ocean Swim is open for swimmers aged 12 and over, with prizes awarded to 1st, 2nd and 3rd place overall for men and women in each race. A fun swim for junior swimmers under the age of 12 is also included.
Typically the water temperature in September is 24 degrees with the air temperature around 28 degrees. The swims will take place on the leeward side of the island with each leg of the event offering a variety of conditions, from shallows to wind chop to tidal flow.
Registration and bookings can be done online at www.green-island.com.au/oceanswim.htm or by calling Great Adventures on (07) 4044 9944.
Costs for swimmers are $55 for adults and $27.50 for swimmers 12 – 14yrs and includes return transfers from Cairns, registration, goodies bag, swim cap and awards presentation. The nipper’s junior swim is free to participate and registration is on the day. Spectators/non-swimmers also travel at a discounted rate.
The Great Adventures Green Island Ocean Swim is a community event and supported by Cairns Crocs, Surf Life Saving Queensland, Powerade and View Tabata.
